The Meal Recovery Coalition (MRC) was officially launched September 18, 2024 at Rutgers University's Cook Student Center, with support from NJ Governor Phil Murphy and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin. Convened by Princeton-based nonprofit Share My Meals, the MRC unites New Jersey's largest employers, food-service providers, healthcare systems, educational institutions, and nonprofits around one mission: recover safe, fully prepared meals that would otherwise go to landfill and deliver them to food-insecure neighbors.
The MRC's 13 member organizations include Accenture, Bayer, Bristol Myers Squibb, Campbell's, Capital Health, Dartcor, Food Bank of South Jersey, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Novartis, Novo Nordisk, Sanofi, and Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK). The MRC's flagship initiative, the New Jersey Food Donation Guidelines, makes food donation safer, easier, and more widely practiced statewide.
"Nearly one million New Jersey residents live with food insecurity because they don't have enough affordable, nutritious food. At the same time, we estimate that 5 million prepared meals end up in landfills annually in the food service sector."
